In a tragic incident, Septian Raharja, a 35-year-old Indonesian footballer, lost his life after being struck by lightning during a friendly match between FC Bandung and FBI Subang on Saturday, February 10. The horrifying moment was captured on video as Raharja collapsed on the pitch after the lightning bolt hit him.

Local reports indicate that Raharja was still breathing after the incident and was rushed to a local hospital. However, he succumbed to intense burns caused by the lightning strike. The football community, fans, and players expressed their shock and offered condolences on social media.

This unfortunate event marks the second time an Indonesian player has been struck by lightning during a match within the past 12 months. Last year, a teenage footballer suffered a cardiac arrest after being struck during the Soeratin U-13 Cup in Bojonegoro, East Java. Fortunately, doctors were able to revive the teenager 20 minutes after the lightning strike.

Similar tragedies have occurred elsewhere. In Brazil, in December 2023, a 21-year-old footballer lost his life, and six others were injured when lightning struck during a match. The young player was rushed to the hospital after collapsing on the field but later succumbed to his injuries.

Safety measures during thunderstorms are crucial, especially for outdoor activities. Our thoughts go out to Septian Raharja’s family, friends, and the football community during this difficult time.
